Watercolor Portraits

Biography

I am a watercolor artist also interested in incorporating other media in my paintings mainly acrylics, gouache, inks, pastels, stamping and collage.
My main interest is in portraits even though I sometimes venture into still life or landscapes with other medium (pastels, drawing, and mixed media). The portraits are painted on paper and are realistic in style. Watercolor is the primary medium and I apply each color in a separate layer to better control the result and contrast. I like to incorporate mixed media in the background, work sometimes with some contouring and I also like to add some drawing on top of the painting to add energy and movement to the painting. This also provides a double lecture, different if you get closer.
My technique for portraits is a fairly systematic process and focuses on details, you can see some step by step demonstrations of my layering on the demos section of this website.
Since 2002 I am an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and been awarded the Associate Membership status in 2010. I am also a signature member of the Northwest Watercolor Society since 2010.
I had paintings exhibited in numerous juried exhibitions in Canada and in the United States, I had a feature article in the August 2009 issue of Watercolor Artist magazine, have been published in a few books including the next book of the Splash series Splash 11 New directions: the best of watercolor available in June 2010, Splash 12 , and the book, Best of Watermedia Worldwide (Kennedy publishing).
